Ahead of Liverpool U23s facing Manchester United at Anfield on Friday evening, take a look back at five of the young rivals' most memorable recent clashes.

The Reds go into the game in second place in Premier League 2 while their opponents sit bottom but, as the cliché goes, form can so often go out of the window when these two teams meet.

Relive five brilliant contests between LFC's youngsters and their foes from down the East Lancs Road below...

October 2017: Manchester United 1-3 Liverpool U23s

A strong Liverpool U23s line-up proved too much for United at Leigh Sports Village. A classy finish from Ovie Ejaria after brilliant approach play from Ben Woodburn edged the Reds in front and, although James Wilson equalised, Neil Critchley’s side showed their quality to run out winners. Marko Grujic headed home from a Woodburn corner to make it 2-1 before Harry Wilson ran through to net a third.

October 2016: Manchester United 1-1 Liverpool U23s

Liverpool U23s had to settle for a point despite creating a host of great chances at Leigh. A superb backheel from Wilson fired the Reds into the lead but Josh Harrop levelled from the penalty spot early in the second half. Danny Ings, Kevin Stewart and Grujic had great openings to find the winner but failed to make them count - in the end, United were grateful to hear the final whistle.

March 2016: Liverpool U21s 1-1 Manchester United

In the days before the switch to an U23 format, the U21s teams played out a 1-1 draw at Prenton Park. The Liverpool line-up that day featured plenty of first-team experience, with Martin Skrtel, Jordon Ibe, Steven Caulker and Danny Ward all called up. Jerome Sinclair fired the Reds in front after superb work from Ryan Kent, but James Weir levelled the score in the 72nd minute to earn a share of the spoils.

August 2014: Liverpool U21s 1-1 Manchester United

Anfield played host to a cracking game as Michael Beale’s new-look side were unfortunate not to take the three points. A brilliant free-kick from Jordan Lussey in front of the Kop had edged the Reds into the lead but United equalised. Sergi Canos, now of Brentford, could have won the game in the latter stages when he raced clean through on goal but couldn’t find the net.

August 2013: Manchester United 2-4 Liverpool U21s

Alex Inglethorpe’s side produced a brilliant display to beat United at Salford City FC with Fabio Borini enjoying a night to remember. United took a seventh-minute lead only for Ibe to make it 1-1 just three minutes later. Goals from Adam Morgan and Borini saw the Reds go 3-1 up and, after Jesse Lingard reduced the deficit, Borini netted again in the second half as Liverpool clinched a 4-2 victory.
