Sixty local school children received a special lesson in food education from an acclaimed chef this week during a two-day cookery course held at Anfield.

Pupils from two local Anfield schools – All Saints Catholic Primary and New Park Primary – were invited to the event, where professional chef, Tony Evans, taught them how to prepare and cook a fresh, healthy meal on a budget.

Ran by LFC’s Red Neighbours programme alongside local cookery training organisation, Can Cook, the sessions saw the children don their aprons and produce their own culinary masterpiece - containing fresh, healthy ingredients and made at a fraction of the cost of ‘pre-prepared’ processed meals.

Each pupil received fresh chicken, vegetables and condiments to prepare and cook a healthy chicken chow mein meal, which they took away with them at the end of the lesson.

Food poverty and education is one of the four main focuses of the Red Neighbours programme, together with support for the elderly community, encouraging a physically active community and creating memorable experiences for young people.

In a bid to tackle food poverty, the cookery sessions with Can Cook aim to educate local children on the benefits of good nutrition, how to prepare healthy meals on a budget and ways of maximising the use of ingredients to produce as many meals as possible.

Pupil Wed Aaloosi, age 10, from New Park Primary School, said: "The session was good fun.

"We learnt new cooking skills and how to budget for meals and save money, which is really important.

"The chef was so passionate about what he was doing - he really inspired me. It’s been the best day I’ve had all year!"
