Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino both started as Brazil strengthened their place at the top of the South American World Cup qualifying section with a 4-1 win over Uruguay on Thursday night.

The Liverpool duo played the majority of the game in Montevideo as part of Brazil's front three alongside Barcelona star Neymar.

An early penalty from Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani put the hosts ahead, but Paulinho levelled for the visitors soon after.

Midfielder Paulinho then went on to complete his hat-trick in the second half, with Neymar also getting on the scoresheet.

Coutinho was withdrawn in the 86th minute, before Firmino came off three minutes later.

Brazil, who have won their last seven qualifiers, now sit seven points clear of second-placed Uruguay in the standings and return to action against Paraguay on Tuesday.
