Liverpool are in Slovenia for matchday three of the Champions League campaign, seeking a victory over Maribor that could move the Reds to the top of Group E, depending on other results.

Darko Milanic's side earned a point from their opening game of the competition with a 1-1 draw at home to Spartak Moscow, which was followed by a 3-0 defeat at Sevilla.

So, which players are likely to be key figures for the hosts tonight? Here are three battles to look out for...

Marcos Tavares vs Joel Matip

Brazilian forward Marcos Tavares is Maribor's all-time top goalscorer - netting 167 times during 10 seasons at the Stadion Ljudski vrt - and is expected to start in a lone striker role with talented youngster Luka Zahovic, who led the team with 16 goals last term, injured in training.

At 33 years old, Tavares now falls into the 'veteran' category but he remains Maribor's biggest threat and scored four goals during the club's six-game Champions League qualification campaign.

"These games give our captain extra energy," Maribor boss Milanic said of Tavares ahead of the clash with the Reds. "He's excellent in the European games and I'm sure [this] will be the same."

Able to play as an attacking midfielder or as a secondary striker, Maribor's five-time player of the year can also pose a threat from deep and could prove a handful for Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren.

Damjan Bohar vs Emre Can

Left-sided midfielder Damjan Bohar joined Maribor from defunct side Mura 05 in 2013 and has since become an integral player for the Slovenian champions, scoring 26 goals in 174 appearances.

His versatility on the left flank could prove key against Liverpool as the 25-year-old is happy to drop deep to play as part of a five-man midfield - which Milanic is expected to deploy - or be more advanced in his preferred forward role if the home side require an additional goal threat.

Bohar's 85th-minute strike against Spartak Moscow - a 15-yard curler after cutting in from the flank - earned his side a point on matchday one of the Champions League and he was also on target in Friday's 2-1 away victory over Rudar with an 82nd-minute winner as second-placed Maribor kept the pressure on Slovenian league leaders Olimpija Ljubljana.

A speedy player, who likes to run at defences and can remain calm in a clutch situation, Bohar will give the right side of Liverpool's midfield something to think about at the Stadion Ljudski vrt.

Marko Suler vs Roberto Firmino

Veteran centre-back Marko Suler was an injury doubt heading into this tie and would have been a big loss for Maribor, but the 34-year-old took part in training on Monday and is expected to take his place at the heart of Milanic's defence.

The retired Slovenian international provides invaluable experience. Suler had won three league titles - with Slovenia side ND Gorica and Polish outfit Legia Warsaw - before joining Maribor in 2014 and has added three more championship winners' medals since.

The No.4 first tasted the Champions League group stages with Maribor in 2014-15, but his appearances this term have been limited by a foot injury. He played the full 90 minutes of the 1-1 Group E draw against Spartak Moscow but was sidelined, maybe tellingly, for the 3-0 loss at Sevilla.

Alongside regular central defensive partner Aleksander Rajcevic, he will be hoping to keep Roberto Firmino and friends in check.
