Manchester United and Liverpool are going head-to-head for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez.

Highly-rated Gimenez is a target for the bitter Premier League rivals, who are both determined to bolster their centre-back options this summer.

As we told you back in November, United boss Jose Mourinho is a huge fan of the pacy and aggressive Uruguayan and is leading the race for the 22-year-old.

But Anfield counterparts Jurgen Klopp, who is eyeing targets for all departments except right-back, has also registered his interest.

Injury and the form of first-choice centre-backs Diego Godin and Stefan Savic, formerly of Manchester City, have prevented Gimenez becoming an Atletico regular.

United and Liverpool hope that will boost their chances of landing him for less than his £39million buyout clause.
