Liverpool have kickstarted negotiations with Roma to sign Emerson Palmieri, according to reports.

Emerson, 23, was linked with a shock transfer deadline day move to Liverpool yesterday as Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his defensive ranks.

The German boss has already signed Andrew Robertson from Hull earlier this season to compete with Alberto Moreno at left-back.

But with James Milner now moving back into midfield he is keen to further strengthen his options in this position.

And reports in Italy claimed Klopp wants Emerson to fill the void and is preparing to launch a bid for him before the 11pm cut-off tonight.

However, Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has offered an update on the surprise transfer by saying talks are now underway between Liverpool and Roma.

It is said the Brazilian himself is keen on a move to Anfield and the Reds would like get a deal over the line.

Should the two clubs reach an agreement over a switch, Emerson will apparently stay with Roma to complete his recovery from a knee injury before joining up with Liverpool once he has finished his rehabilitation.

It is expected that he will be fully fit by the end of October after tearing his knee ligaments back in May.

Emerson has been impressive for Roma since signing from Santos in 2015.

He made 34 appearances for the Serie A side last season as they finished third in the league.

Emerson is contracted to Roma until the summer of 2021.
